Joiri Minaya was born in New York and grew up in the Dominican Republic. She has lived and worked in New York City again since 2013. She also lived in Belgium for a while. The various places where she lived and grew up made her aware of subjectivity depending on context. This caused her work to change direction: an in-depth and intimate probing of themes of identity evolved into an exploration of larger transnational and transcultural exchanges. Her recent work focuses on destabilising historical and contemporary representations of an imagined tropical identity.
