A Document was previously shown at the 2022 Venice Biennale. It is a recording of reality in its simplest binary form: above and below, a clear sky and a blue sea. A collection of data – in short, a document. With this work, Vladimir Nikolić focuses on the relationship between technology and water. Water is an important part of our bodies. Water is ultimately what connects us all. You can compare the flow of water to our Western conception of linear time. Its movement is such that it does not allow us to determine its beginning or end. The work makes an abstraction of time and space.
The video work is presented in such a way that the water boundary (the horizon) is at the visitor's eye level. Although the sea looks relatively calm, the many surface waves evoke an ominous feeling. For Vladimir Nikolić, this is a metaphor for the uncertainty prevailing in the world today – a world full of irrationality in which we do not know exactly where we are going or what the consequences of our actions will be.
