“Untitled” (Strange Bird), 1993

Billboard Dimensions vary with installation
During After Paradise, a series of six billboards will be put on display: “Untitled” (Strange Bird) from 1993. The use of billboards was a key strategy for Felix Gonzalez-Torres to reach a diverse audience and maximise the public function of art. The audience plays a critical role, allowing multiple readings to emerge, thus completing the work, so to speak. The billboards deploy strategies of anonymity and alienation: rather than releasing powerful emotions, the lack of explanatory signage and the subtle imagery make people think.
