Felix Gonzalez-Torres was born in Cuba but lived from 1979 to 1995 mostly in New York. He was trained as a photographer and well versed in art theory, which was reflected in his short and productive career. He made a significant contribution to the development of the conceptual art of the 1980s and 1990s. Even today, nearly 30 years after his death, his practice continues to influence contemporary discourse. He died in Miami in 1996 from AIDS.
